New Year's Eve 2025/26: When Germany failed again - eleven dead, hundreds injured, one crossbow

Spoiler: It's got worse. Not a joke. Deadly serious.

The balance of horror: New Year's Eve 2025 to 2026
While the pyrotechnics industry celebrates record sales - 197 million euros in the previous year, 200 to 225 million are expected for 2025/26¹ ² - we lost at least eleven people in that one night.³⁴

Two 18-year-olds in Bielefeld - with their whole lives ahead of them - die from self-made pyrotechnics. Both suffer fatal facial injuries.⁵⁶ A 70-year-old woman in Bochum dies in an explosion in her flat - firecrackers, illegal, fatal.⁷ A five-year-old in Lohne runs into the street shortly after midnight, is hit by a car and dies hours later in hospital. ⁸⁹ While rescue workers desperately try to save him, rubberneckers photograph the scene of the accident. ¹⁰

Three people burn to death in their homes in Baden-Württemberg because rockets start fires.¹¹ A 67-year-old man dies in a violent confrontation on a railway platform - homicide, homicide squad investigating.¹² Two people die in a stabbing.¹³

When children lose their hands

The mutilated

The Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin alone reported 25 patients with hand injuries, some of them very serious - amputations of fingers or parts of the hand were necessary.¹⁴ And now comes the sentence that tears at your heart: „But what's particularly bad is that there are eight more children whose lives have been changed forever by these serious injuries.“¹⁵¹⁶

Eight children and young people between the ages of 14 and 17. Eight young people who will never fully regain their grip, who will never be able to play sport without worrying, who will never forget what their hand looked like before it exploded.

In Merseburg, a 28-year-old man tries to light two firecrackers at the same time - fireworks class 4, only authorised for commercial use. Both explode in his hands.¹⁷ In Baden-Württemberg, a 42-year-old man loses three fingers in a fireworks explosion.¹⁸

Crossbow, firecrackers, rockets:

When helpers become a target

Fischbachau, Upper Bavaria, 3 o'clock in the morning. Paramedics find a man lying in front of a house. They want to help. He threatens them with a loaded crossbow. They retreat and call the police. The man barricades himself in the house. Two hours of negotiations. Then the SEK intervenes. They shoot. The 33-year-old is hit in the torso and survives seriously injured.¹⁹²⁰²¹

This is not an isolated case.

In Berlin, 35 police officers are injured, two so seriously that they have to be hospitalised. 21 suffered blast trauma - permanent hearing damage caused by firecrackers.²²²³ 430 people are arrested.²⁴

At a left-wing demonstration „New Year's Eve in prison“ in Berlin-Moabit, around 200 participants attack the police „massively with pyrotechnics“. Eight police officers were injured.²⁵ In Hamburg, my second adopted home, ten police officers are so seriously injured that they are unable to continue their duties.²⁶ In Frankfurt am Main, the city where we grew up before we - me, unfortunately, terminally - moved to Bavaria, an ambulance is attacked and a member of the German Red Cross is injured.²⁷ That really is the last straw. What kind of arseholes do that?

Record year for the pyro industry, disaster year for the rest

And while all this is happening - while children lose their fingers, while rescue workers are threatened with crossbows, while eleven people die - the fireworks industry is celebrating. The Association of the Pyrotechnic Industry (VPI) proudly announces: 197 million euros in sales at the turn of the year 2024/25 - a historic record.²⁸ Even higher figures are expected for 2025/26. ²⁹

VPI President Thomas Schreiber: „We are delighted about this great demand, as it proves that for many people New Year's Eve and fireworks are inextricably linked and the tradition is cherished.“³⁰

„Tradition.“ The word sticks in your mind as you look at the pictures: Children without fingers. Burnt flats. Police officers with blast trauma. A five-year-old in a coffin. The corks are popping at the pyrotechnics industry association.

Why we finally need to break with New Year's Eve fireworks

When the hand explodes

It's 11:47 pm on 31 December. While you're perhaps thinking about which champagne you're about to open, Bina - a German shepherd dog from animal welfare - sits trembling in the bathroom. Her heart is racing. Her pupils are dilated. She is panting. It's been banging outside for hours. Bina is scared to death. And she's not alone.

Robert Marc Lehmann, marine biologist and animal rights activist, has described exactly this scene in his powerful video.³² „Young people threw firecrackers at Bina,“ he says. „Since then, she's been really pre-stressed.“ On New Year's Eve, he brings his three dogs into the innermost room without windows, plays classical music and stays calm himself - „because they realise when I'm restless“. Three days before to one day after New Year's Eve: no walks without a lead. The risk of the dogs running away in panic is too great.

What we are spending 200 million euros on is forcing people to lock up their animals for days, to book hotels at the airport because there is a strict ban on firecrackers at the airport, to run tractors at full throttle to save cows from going mad. Eleven people are dead. Hundreds injured and hundreds arrested. Thousands of animals in panic. And we call it „tradition“.

The air to cut

Particulate matter, heavy metals, poison

Imagine you're standing in the centre of Leipzig, Hamburg or Berlin on New Year's Eve. You can hardly breathe. The smoke burns your eyes, your lungs. The air smells of sulphur and burnt plastic. What you inhale is not harmless „fog“ - it is a toxic cocktail of fine dust, heavy metals and chemicals.³³

In Germany, around 2,050 tonnes of particulate matter (PM10) are released every year from fireworks alone - the majority of this in just a few hours around midnight.³⁴ In many cities, particulate matter levels shoot up to over 1,000 micrograms per cubic metre on New Year's Eve - while the average annual mean value is around 15 micrograms.³⁵

These are tiny particles that penetrate deep into your lungs, promote inflammation and can be life-threatening, especially for asthmatics, children, the elderly and anyone with pre-existing conditions.³⁸ In addition, heavy metals such as barium, strontium and aluminium are released into the soil and water as dust after burning.³⁹

Wild animals in the fight for survival

Now imagine you're a wild goose. Yes, I know, stupid comparison. Just for a moment. You've just settled down on a body of water to rest for the night. You've been foraging for food during the day, your energy reserves are low - it's winter, every calorie counts. And then: explosion. Flashes of light. Smoke. Noise. Panic.

Studies by the Max Planck Society show that wild geese leave their roosting grounds on New Year's Eve and fly 5 to 16 kilometres further than usual. In one extreme case, an extra 500 kilometres were documented. The birds fly significantly higher than normal - and use up enormous reserves of energy. In the first ten days after New Year's Eve, the animals have to spend around 10 per cent more time looking for food to compensate for this loss of energy. ⁴⁰

Apparently, it is not only the noise but also the particulate matter that is causing the animals problems. In all the areas studied, particulate matter levels rose by up to 650 per cent on New Year's Eve. Researchers found that birds left their usual roosting areas and chose places that were further away from human settlements and had lower concentrations of particulate matter.⁴¹

„New Year's Eve is a disaster for animals,“ says Klaus Hackländer, CEO of the German Wildlife Foundation. After every New Year's Eve, there are dead birds lying around that have flown into walls in panic. In the Alps, chamois fall from rocks when fireworks are set off at mountain huts.⁴²

There are no exact figures on how many wild animals die on New Year's Eve. The actual extent is probably far greater: many animals live on the back burner in winter - hibernators such as hedgehogs, but also songbirds and deer, which do not move any more than necessary. A great tit loses around 10 per cent of its body weight in a normal night. If it is repeatedly startled by firecrackers over a period of days and has little time to forage, this can be fatal.⁴³

Larger animals also suffer: Hedgehogs wake up from hibernation, deer and wild boar flee - both of which use up valuable winter fat reserves. As the first milk for fawns in May is often fed from these fat reserves, the stress at the turn of the year can mean poorer chances of survival for the offspring in spring.⁴⁴

Pets between the bathroom and the airport:

The invisible panic

428 dogs escaped in Germany on New Year's Eve 2024/25 alone - reported to the pet register Tasso. That's more than five times as many as on an average day (79 dogs).⁴⁵ In 2022/23, when „everything was allowed“ again after the coronavirus lockdowns, 667 dogs and 500 cats escaped on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.⁴⁶

The most unsafe city for dogs? Berlin, with 493 registered cases in the last four years. Followed by Hamburg (211), Frankfurt am Main (138), Leipzig (112) and Cologne (110).⁴⁷

And these are just the reported cases. Nobody knows how many dogs and cats break free in panic, run through the streets, run in front of cars, flee into untraceable hiding places or spend days trembling somewhere.

The Animal Welfare Association's tally for the turn of the year 2022/23: 212 dead and 17 injured animals, including both wild and domestic animals.⁴⁸

Some holders*innen rent hotels at the airport because fireworks are banned there. Over 100 pet owners were expected in Leipzig-Halle at the turn of the year 2025/26 - with dogs and cats, in noise-protected rooms. „They went for walks and met new friends,“ says the hotel manager. Water, small gifts for each dog - and above all: peace and quiet.⁴⁹

Farm animals in the barn:

When panic becomes a danger to life

A horse in Euskirchen falls into a well shaft almost three metres deep because it backs away from a firecracker. Several rescue attempts are necessary before the 300-kilo animal is successfully rescued with a wheel loader. It was lucky: apart from minor injuries, it remained unharmed.⁵⁰
A farmer from Aachen reports how his cows galloped through the barn in panic, „flying round the corner above the floor“. „The animals panicked and I could shout and scream calmly, but then it's no use.“ In the worst case: broken bones. And for livestock, that means euthanising them.⁵¹

A horse farmer from Cologne explains: „You can already see that they react by moving. It can happen that they injure themselves more seriously, that they kick each other. In the worst case scenario, they could go through the fences.“⁵²

The farmers„ solutions? The Aachen farmer grows hedges and strategically places bales of straw to block the view. And two tractors at full throttle - for an hour, as “counter-noise„, so that the cows don't notice the fireworks. The horse farmer takes all the horses to the largest pasture so that they “have space to run off the stress".⁵³

What we don't do to protect our animals from what we wouldn't want to do without at any price.

Fireworks banned at Hellabrunn Zoo for the first time

Munich shows responsibility:

At the turn of the year 2025/26, the city of Munich issued a ban on fireworks in the immediate vicinity of Hellabrunn Zoo for the first time. No fireworks may be set off within a radius of around 150 metres.⁵⁴⁵⁵

Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter: „Fireworks and rockets are banned around Hellabrunn Zoo this year - good news for all animal lovers and an important step for animal welfare.“⁵⁶

Hellabrunn Zoo plays an important role in international breeding and conservation programmes. Zoo Director Dr Rasem Baban: „The new fireworks ban zone will save our animal inhabitants, some of whom are extremely sensitive to noise, a considerable amount of unnecessary stress and nocturnal disturbance.“⁵⁷

Despite the ban, on New Year's Eve all animals that can normally move between indoor and outdoor areas at night are housed exclusively in the protected indoor areas.⁵⁸

My adopted home of Munich shows that there is another way. And it's long overdue.

Refugees and people traumatised by war: war in your head instead of a party in heaven
For many refugees from war zones, loud explosions, bright lights and sirens are not an abstract soundscape, but the physically memorised sound of bombing, flight and fear of death.⁵⁹

Psychiatrists report that fireworks can trigger flashbacks, panic attacks, sleep disorders and massive stress reactions in traumatised people.⁶⁰ A report on New Year's Eve fireworks and war veterans describes how loud bangs unpredictably trigger memories of combat missions and mentally catapult those affected back into combat zones in a fraction of a second - with all the physical symptoms that entails.⁶¹

In a world where wars are once again in the news every day and millions of people are fleeing from bombs, the idea that we are „celebrating“ with explosion-like noises in narrow streets, of all things, seems like a cynical anachronism.

„We've always done it this way!“ - Really? Let's take a look at the story:

„Tradition“? An economic miracle product of the 1960s

- 1506: First fireworks display in Germany - commissioned by Emperor Maximilian I for the Imperial Diet of Constance.⁶²
- 1802: Oldest evidence of New Year's Eve fireworks in the general population.
- 1920s: heyday with around 200 businesses.
- 1939: Complete ban on fireworks by the National Socialists.
- 1953: Re-authorisation in the FRG.⁶³
- 1960s: Chinese firecrackers appear, mass market emerges - „a development that only started after the Second World War, after the economic miracle“, says cultural scientist Trummer. At that time, fireworks became affordable for the general public. „That's when an industry really developed.“⁶⁴⁶⁵

Today's form of mass private fireworks is not a centuries-old custom, but a consumer phenomenon of the post-war period, which only became a mass ritual in the 1960s when imported goods from Asia became affordable.

„Tradition“ here is primarily a marketing argument for an industry that thrives on exploding single-use plastic and imported chemicals.

The hidden costs: Who really pays for the party?
Let's summarise all the costs that New Year's Eve fireworks really cause:

Sales turnover: 200-225 million euros (record 2025/26)⁶⁶
Clean-up costs: The city of Reutlingen alone pays 6,000 to 6,500 euros for 14 people, 6 vehicles, 6 hours of work. The city of Reutlingen alone pays 6,000 to 6,500 euros for a six-hour clean-up crew of 14 people and 6 vehicles to clear the streets of firecracker debris on New Year's morning.⁶⁷ Extrapolated to the whole of Germany - with 83.5 million inhabitants - that would be around 4.4 million euros for street cleaning alone on 1 January.⁶⁸ Added to this is the commitment of volunteers and honorary staff, whose work remains unpaid.

And that's just the beginning: these 4.4 million euros do not include the days of clean-up work afterwards, the repairs to destroyed litter bins, playgrounds and bus stops, the removal of illegal rubbish (Leipzig: 12,000 euros) or the damage to property (Chemnitz: 9,500 euros for destroyed playground equipment and vending machines).⁶⁹ And again I can only shake my head inwardly. What? Why? Wtf!

Deployment costs for the police, fire brigade and rescue services: Additional shifts, overtime, increased readiness - no nationwide figures available, but the costs run into millions.⁷⁰
Health costs: Treatment of thousands of injured people, operations, amputations, blast trauma, long-term consequences - no estimate available, but certainly in the tens of millions.
Insurance claims: fires, property damage, vehicles - no nationwide figures.⁷¹
Environmental damage: particulate matter, heavy metals in soil and water, microplastics - long-term costs cannot be quantified, but they are real and permanent.

In Munich, 49 tonnes of New Year's Eve waste was collected - 40 percent more than in the previous year. 185 employees were on duty from the early hours of the morning.⁷² Between 50 and 60 tonnes are expected in Dresden.⁷³ This is taking on proportions that are no longer tangible.

Animal welfare costs: animal shelters, vets, rescue operations, lost farm animals - also difficult to quantify, but considerable.

The real total bill - including police, fire brigade and rescue operations, health costs for thousands of injured people, insurance claims due to fires and the long-term environmental consequences - is well into the three-digit million range. 300 million plus. And that's for a single night. The sky's the limit. How do you put a value on a human life that is claimed by an illegally procured firecracker?

We all pay for it - some of us with our lives - even if we don't shoot.

The majority has long since decided: Over 3 million signatures
Almost 3.1 million people have signed a petition by the Berlin Police Union (GdP) in favour of a nationwide ban on firecrackers on New Year's Eve. In the days leading up to New Year 2026 alone, more than 700,000 supporters signed the petition.⁷⁴

Another petition by Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) received more than one million signatures.⁷⁵ In January 2025, DUH and GdP jointly submitted 1.96 million signatures to the Federal Ministry of the Interior.⁷⁶

In addition to DUH and GdP, 35 organisations are part of the growing action alliance for a firecracker-free New Year's Eve: The German Medical Association, the Federal Association of Doctors in the Public Health Service, the German Children's Fund, the Berlin-Brandenburg Ophthalmological Society and many more.⁷⁷

Representative surveys show that 58 per cent of Germans are in favour of a nationwide, general ban on private fireworks displays on New Year's Eve. Only 34 per cent are against it.⁷⁸

The majority have long been in favour of a ban. Only politicians are still hesitating.

The future shines differently: drone shows worldwide
While Germany is still debating, other countries and cities have long since shown how it can be done:
- Shanghai 2019/20: 2,000 drones in the night sky - spectacular, silent, reusable.⁸⁰
- Scotland Hogmanay 2020: drone show instead of fireworks.⁸¹
- Germany 2025/26: Wiesbaden (200 drones over the Kurhaus), Stuttgart (150+ drones), Lüneburg (200 drones, organised by Deutsche Umwelthilfe).⁸²⁸³

Shows with up to 6,500 drones are now being organised internationally - 20-minute performances with elaborate formations, portraits, lettering and symbols. ⁸⁴

41 per cent of Germans consider drone shows to be an animal-friendly alternative. 52 per cent see them as a good way to reduce noise.⁸⁵

The only downside is that the high-tech shows are weather-dependent - they can be cancelled at short notice in the event of strong winds or rain.⁸⁶

But is that really a problem? Or is it perhaps simply the price of a future in which nobody trembles, flees or dies just because we are starting the new year?

What we can do now: Concrete steps

Don't buy any more private fireworks. Instead, donate the money to animal shelters, sea rescue, refugee aid, climate protection projects - to anyone who really protects life.⁸⁷
Sign the petition. The petition by Deutsche Umwelthilfe and the GdP in favour of a ban on firecrackers is still active: mitmachen.duh.de/boellerfreies-silvester
Become politically active. Write to your MPs, contact local politicians, demand municipal firework ban zones or centralised, professional alternatives.
Protect pets and livestock. Bring animals indoors into quiet rooms, play music to dampen the noise, only take them for walks on a lead (3 days before to 1 day after New Year's Eve), secure stable animals as well as possible.⁸⁸
Talk to neighbours. Raise awareness, share information, talk to refugees in the neighbourhood about how they can make the night safe.
Document it. If your animals panic, film it (10-20 seconds is enough) and share it with animal welfare organisations, the media and politicians. If it's not filmed, it didn't happen - as bitter as that sounds.

Another New Year's Eve is possible

The vision of a peaceful new year

Imagine: 31 December, 11:55 pm. You are standing in a square with friends. Hundreds of glowing drones are flying in the sky, forming patterns, words, symbols. Music is playing. People are laughing. At midnight, there is a quiet, spectacular light show - and then silence. Or music. Or laughter.

No explosions. No smoke. No trembling dogs in the bathroom. No wild birds shooting into the night sky in panic. No emergency services under fire. No 16-year-olds arriving at the emergency room with their hands in tatters.

This is not a utopia. It is a decision.

We can end a ritual that is measurably harmful - and create something new that fits in with a society that takes the climate, health, animals and human rights seriously.
And yes, we may have to give up a few seconds of noise for that. But we gain a night where we can all join in the celebrations.

How much longer?
Eleven dead. Eight children without complete hands. 35 injured police officers. A man with a crossbow. A five-year-old in a coffin. New Year's Eve 2025 to 2026 was not a slip-up. It was the logical consequence of a system that prioritises profit over human life year after year.

Over 3 million people have signed a petition in favour of a ban on firecrackers.⁹⁰ 58 per cent of Germans are in favour of a ban.⁹¹ 35 organisations - from the German Medical Association to the Police Union and the German Children's Fund - are calling for an end to private fireworks.⁹²

And yet: record sales. 197 million euros. Soon 225 million.⁹³

How many children still have to lose their hands?
How many more people have to die?
How many rescue workers still need to be attacked?
How many animals still have to flee in fear of their lives?

Until we finally realise: This „tradition“ is a massacre.
