A fictional short story based on the words and life of Captain Paul Watson. Every Friday a new captivating Consequence.
It was Bill Darnell, a young activist, who coined the name. In a meeting with other environmental and peace activists, he said: "Let's fight for peace and the earth - for Green and Peace." The name stuck. It was short, catchy and summarised the essence of our mission.
I was part of a small but passionate group. Next to me were Jim and Marie Bohlen, Dorothy and Irving Stowe, and Bob Hunter, a charismatic journalist with a talent for big ideas. Together we planned to stop the explosion - or at least draw the world's attention to it.
But how should you fight a superpower like the USA? With an old fishing trawler called "Phyllis Cormack". Money was scarce. We collected donations, sold handicrafts, gave lectures and even received small sums from churches and trade unions. It was barely enough to pay for the equipment and fuel, but the mission was too important to let it fail.
The "Phyllis Cormack" was not a modern ship. It was an old sea trawler that had fished in the waters of the west coast. We turned it into a symbol of resistance. The crew was made up of volunteers - not professional sailors, but ordinary people who believed in an extraordinary idea.
The journey began in Vancouver. It was a grey morning when we cast off. The air was damp and the fog hung like a curtain over the harbour. Our goal was clear: we wanted to stop the nuclear tests by steering our ship directly into the danger zone. It was a daring tactic - the US navy could stop us at any time.
On the way, I could feel the tension on board. We knew that we were embarking on a dangerous mission. But it was also a moment of unity. We ate together, laughed, discussed politics and the environment and made plans. Bob Hunter kept our spirits high with stories and his keen powers of observation.
As we approached Amchitka, the situation began to escalate. The sea became rougher and the waves crashed over the deck. Suddenly, a US warship appeared on the horizon. They radioed us and told us to turn back. "This is a restricted area," the officer's voice echoed over the radio. We looked at each other and hesitated - but only briefly.
"We are here to protect the Earth," Bob Hunter shouted into the microphone. "We will not back down."
The next few hours were a game of nerves and tactics. The warship came closer and threatened to ram us, but we held our course. Eventually they had to let us pass. It was a small victory, but it felt monumental.
In the end, we were unable to prevent the explosion. On 6 November 1971, "Cannikin" detonated and the earth shook. But our resistance was not in vain. The images of our small crew rising up against the superpower went around the world. They inspired thousands to join the movement.
"Phyllis Cormack" became a symbol of protest, and Greenpeace was born. Today I know that this journey was the beginning of something bigger than all of us. It was the moment when the world began to wake up.

Dhe legendary environmental activist Captain Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and founder of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation, was arrested in Greenland in July 2024. This was done at the request of the whaling nation Japan without an international or national arrest warrant and without there ever having been a judgement or even a trial. The Danish judiciary delayed the defence hearing month after month. Incriminating video footage that would exonerate Paul Watson beyond doubt was not released by the court for almost half a year. Paul Watson spent his 74th birthday in prison and was only released on 16 December 2024. The bland aftertaste of the blanket criminalisation of activism remains. Clearly a political issue, as the Danish Faroe Islands would have liked to see Watson die in a Japanese prison. It is unacceptable that people like Paul Watson should be extradited to an Asian whaling nation for allegedly causing minor damage to property when politicians have been lying to us with impunity on climate issues for half a century. For those of us who were there, who invested energy, time and a lot of money in Paul's rescue, it already feels like another adventure in Paul's heroic life, even though he has only been back in Paris for a week, at home with his wife and children. So that we never forget how important the fight for the earth is, I publish exciting short stories from Paul Watson's life from time to time. Of course, the storyboard is fictional, as I made it up.
