In this case, the message of the English-language slogan "Eating Fish Kills Fish" should be clear even without a translator. Eating fish kills fish. To be honest, I would even translate it as "Eating fish kills fish". It doesn't sound so much like a commodity but more like the living creature that fish are. And I don't think anyone except the AfD disputes the fact that eating fish means that fish have to be killed. Because, well, before they were caught, the fish were alive and kicking in the sea and on the plate they are dead. So they were sent over the Jordan for your own personal taste buds.

The fact that fish feel pain has been sufficiently proven by experimental tests. We don't need to discuss this. It can be measured.

I also think animal testing is daft. All the more so the more pain is physically proven to be inflicted on the animals. But to prove that fish feel pain, I have to inflict pain on the fish. And without knowledge, how could I convince you that what fish go through on the long journey to your plate is cruel? How incredibly despicable the "product" is treated.

If we also take the figures into account, it becomes so astronomical that our brains probably switch off or something. Otherwise, it's hard to understand why we don't throw up our hands and realise that it can't be done like this, that something has to be done. Don't we? We can't seriously kill between 800 and 2,300 billion wild animals every year for our own enjoyment. Then there are the 50 to 130 billion fish from aquacultures, which are also a complete ecological disaster. These are dimensions that go beyond anything that has ever been seen before. I'll try to put the number into words. Let's assume a total of 2,000 billion fish are killed every year. That's a two with twelve zeros, so 2,000,000,000,000,000 dead animals.

This year, for the first time, there will be more than eight billion people on this planet. That's 250 fish per year per capita. Including the heads of babies and small children. And those of vegans too. And of vegetarians. And the heads of all those who simply don't like fish. So, the fish for eating, that's what I mean.

In other words, we kill over 63,419 fish every second. Assuming it took you, like the average person, 1:30 minutes to read the 388 words so far, the human species has already killed another 6 million fish. I'm not even talking about bycatch. These are benchmarks that we no longer have under control.

At this point, I'm borrowing another photo from other - good - people. It's from the Austrian Association Against Animal Factories. Hopefully they'll turn a blind eye to the image rights. At least I'm a member.

Is it beautiful? Does the picture excite us sexually? Or why do we find it appetising? Over 60,000 times a second this picture. The photo literally cries out for unbearable pain and help.

What has gone so wrong with our genetics that we find this normal or condone it? It's not normal. And that's not okay either. That's not possible. We can't do that.

What I can make is a T-shirt with the theme. It's from the "Eating Fish Kills" collection, which was one of my first.

All animals possessing a nervous system and pain receptors are capable of suffering the effects of pain. This includes fish. Fish feel pain out of biological necessity, just as mammals do. Without the ability to feel pain, they would not survive. Much research has been done over the past thirty years and there is now scientific consensus recognising that fish and other sea creatures are sentient. Most fish are gutted whilst still alive or are left to suffocate. The whole process is totally ungoverned by humane protocols, let alone laws, and - in terms of numbers of victims - is the greatest animal welfare scandal of our times. (Animal Aid)
